iPhone problems and solutions

This is my first post about IPhone. First of all, I am a PC guy and I don't like Apple products in general. Half year ago my company offered me a choice of iPhone or Blackberry. I picked iPhone, so since then I am not so anti Apple as I used to be. I still never going to buy Mac, but I have Leopard OS installed on one of my virtual machines.

So, out of the box iPhone is great device. It has a lot of applications, but ...

Problem #1

There are too many IPhones around and all of them have the same ringtone for incomming mail and text message. It quickly becomes very annoying. However there is no way to change it without jailbraking IPhone.

Problem #2

There are no voice dial in IPhone 3G. You can install app such as Voice Dialer Plus, but you can't train those apps and unfortunatly they don't understand my accent or russian names in my contacts. Vocalia is a little better app, since you can add pronentiazations for your contacts. The only other solution is to buy IPhone 3GS. But may be it's time to switch to Google Nexus One instead?

Problem #3

You can develop applications only using Mac and you can make it oficially available only thru App store, but Apple does screen new applications. You can use VMWare virtual machine to run Leopard, however it's pretty complecated and might be even not possible with your hardware.

Solutions:

First of all you need to jailbrake your iphone, keep in mind this is going to void your warranty. Of course you can always backup your iPhone and in case of malfuntioning restore it and then bring to apple store, but this might not always work. You can read more about jailbrake on Dev Team Blog. Then download WinSCP. Using WinSCP you can access your iPhone over ssh. Make sure that you change default password (alpine). 

Note: Starting from July 26, 2010 it is legal to jailbrake iPhone. DMCA has exemptions in this regards. See iPhone jailbreaking and Android rooting get DMCA exemption for more info.

 

IPhone folders:

Here is a list of IPhone folders that I found to be useful:

/private/var/stash/Applications.something
Native IPhone applications, such as Map, SMS, Calendar and etc. Those apps can't be uninstalled, but can be manually deleted using ssh :-).

/private/var/mobile/Applications.something
Apps from apple store.

/private/var/stash/Ringtones.something
Your ringtones. There is a way to upload ringtones without jailbraking of IPhone.

/System/Library/Audio/UISounds
Use this folder to solve Problem #1.

my iphone is not switch on. i put my phone in to charge it was charging and i got a call from my client once your discussion over again put the phone in to charge it not happening i try press the start button its not on. please guide how to start my phone all my dates inside.

Help, I have put my iphone on speech where I have to double tap everything to open then, the slide feature dosent work with it so I cant scroll, I need to scroll to get it back to normal settings :o( help

The screen has lost one of the primary colours - I think the red - everything looks green and purple. Sometimes by resetting it goes back to the normal colours but this does not work any more. What is the solution?

when my iphone 3g is in upright position the letter "p" and "zero" doesn't work it's hard to get the delete button to work as well. have tried to powering on and off multiple times. used to work but doesn't now. if i turn it sideways to type then it works. any suggestions

Sounds like you have a dead spot on your touch screen. Open browser on your iphone and try to position some website with link in exact same spot as your letter P. See if link is clickable.

Hello, good morning. The problem that I'm having is with the sound on my iPhone like if somebody calls me or I call them I can't hear anything. Also, when on my phone constantly switches from silent to sound mode. What do you think I should do?

One of my coworkers had the same problem. This is hardware problem. Go to apple store and exchange your iphone.

updated itunes while iphone was connected now icon on iphone of charger going up to itunes. only emergency calls also, have tried everything i can think of and am on the verge of throwing it out the window, can you help?

Wait until it starts happening more often and then go to apple store to replace phone. The same thing happened before for my co-worker.

Hi my iphone had a problem For every second when i unlock my mobile a message has been displaying on the screen continuesly,This is the message

This accessory is not made to work with iphone
would you like to turn on airplane Mode to reduce audio interference ?You will not be able to make or receive calls.{yes or No}

I use my laptop for charging and i never connect it to any other accessories.
Plz Find me a solution

The screen on my 3g just went blank with slight virtical lines running top to bottom, more so on the right hand side. It is only just over a year old.

My friend son has a iPhone3 that was jail broken , his son hooked it up to the computer and update the software , after he was done his phone turn off . He try to turn it on and the only thing that happens screen comes on with the apple image for about 1 min. Then turns off , everytime he try's , it's the same. Can you please help me , I have the phone and Iam trying to help them.

Double tap the screen with 3 fingers and it will unzoom. Then to switch the feature off,
go to settings, accessability and turn off zoom feature.

My iPhone acts like someone is pushing the wake/sleep button continuously, but I'm not touching it! The iPhone may work just fine for a period, then it starts all over and then it goes off....it automatically send the option "slide to poweroff" again and again

I have iphone 3gs.If i keep in my pocket and I walk small distance getting switch off. When I connecting the charger on the screen showing itunes icon on the top and bottom showing usb cable. some times it is not open the main screen. What is the problem.

Iv'e got a pay as you go 3g and live in Jersey,and have been to the mainland recently where my phone did'nt work.
I bought a tesco pay as you go sim,which i used for the week.And returning home i switched the sim card back only to find no sim tray,would the phone still work without the tray or do i need to buy a new one.

You don't download Sydia. You need to jailbrake your iphone to get it. Restore original firmware to get rid of Cydia

recently my 3gs has, at random intervals, but mostly when im connected to the internet or am watching a video, just restarts itself. Or at least the screen goes totally blank and the apple logo appears, then it starts up again like i had just held down the wake/sleep and home button down for 10 seconds; anything i had done was then reversed again.
What is the name of this prolem and how can i fix it?
p.s. my phone is no longer under warranty.

I m having problem while synchronizing my iphone to the itunes software.... itunes is asking for making backup of all the purchased applications present on my phone... and as it proceeds it starts removing those applications from phone..... can anybudy guide me to fix this problem???
